June -
The
beginning of Summer starts off with pretty Kanzashi of Hydrangea (ajisai),
Weeping Willow (yanagi), Umbrellas, Leaves with Pinks, Water, and
Dew-drops.
As this is the rainy season in Japan, motifs such as the
fond-of-water willow, little rain drops, and the blue colorings of the hydrangea
are used to express this. This is often a favorite time for the geisha as the
willow motif is traditionally associated with geisha and the "flower and willow
world."

The peak of Summer means festivals and just as festive Kanzashi such as
Dew-on-Grass (tsuyushiba), Round or Folding Fans, Fireworks, Dragonflies,
Butterflies, Pampas Grass, and Special Festival ornaments. Fans are a popular
motif and are usually of the round uchiwa variety, but occasionally you
may find folding dancing fans or decorated with tiny tsumami-e flowers.
The fans
motif stems from the
Gion Festival which
takes place at this time with the fan motif being featured changing each year
according to the theme. This huge event held at the Gion geisha district in
Kyoto
involves hundreds of traditional dances by geisha.

The end of Summer is nearing and the Kanzashi found during this month feature Silver backed Pampas (susuki)
Grass, Purple morning glory (asagao),
Pink backed
Pampas (susuki) Grass,
and Fans.
The susuki grass is stylized as a bursting of shiny spines. The color
difference is most seen in the difference between junior and senior maiko, that
being that the Senior maiko wear silver-white and junior maiko wear pink or red.
You may also see senior maiko wearing the popular motif of morning glories.
